22 Front Street

Worcester, MA

Historic Commercial Residential Foundation Modular Other Structure

22 Front St is located in the heart of Worcester MA. Built in 1910 the building has been a part of the city’s center block for over 100 years. Frank was called in by the owners of the building who were looking to replace the heavy trick masonry and sandstone facade with a more modern glass storefront. This project presented an interesting challenge due to the lack of structural records including basic plans or records of any remodeling before the current owners.

Frank began this project by doing an initial assessment and inventory of the building’s existing structure and what support systems were already in place. Next, Frank drew up plans of the building so he could begin to develop the methodology of how to modify the existing structure to support the new facade. Luckily the building was in good shape, and there were no major modifications needed.

The modifications needed were associated with how the new facade would be attached to the structure. By collaborating with the the glass designer Frank was able to create a custom design to ensure both the structural integrity and the aesthetic continuity of the facade.
